Speakers: Leslie Torburn, MS, PT and Cheryl Pierson-Carey, MS, PT
Topic: Clinical Research

Leslie Torburn, MS, PT and Cheryl Pierson-Carey, MS, PT spoke to a well attended district meeting crowd about the concept of participating in clinical research. They provided a wonderful insight into the basic ways to get organized and get involved. They explained the many opportunities to get involved through the use of the clinic to prove patients, participate in data collection or act as a resource consultant. They emphasized the fact that participating in clinical research need not be over powering or threatening. They even said it could actually be FUN, and definitely rewarding. Leslie led off the night with a great step-by-step approach to ìovercoming the fear of getting involved. Cheryl then capped off the discussion by showing us an example of the type of research she is doing at the Palo Alto VA involving post CVA patients in a LE strengthening exercise program. Both Cheryl and Leslie are members of the California APTA Research Special Interest Group (CRSIG). Thank you so much to Leslie and Cheryl for coming to the district meeting and enlightening us on the subject of clinical research.
