Legislative Issues

The Process Continues
by Bruce Beekley

This year promises to be an exciting one for all. The opportunity for a more formal legislative approach to health care reform seems possible. We as PT's need to stay involved. Please do not leave it up to just the few.

It appears that there are many ways at which people say they are involved: Staying "in-the-know" by reading, knowing what is happening via verbal communication or personal interaction, support superficially of others who need time, energy and/or resources to participate, financial contributions and direct participation and action. Whichever the case, the key here is that these people ARE involved.

Being or becoming involved with Association matters is valuable and essential. Even if all that you do is continue to pay for your APTA dues, I know that you truly believe that you are furthering the profession. Likewise, maybe all you may do is actively participate in yearly clinical instruction. That, too is staying involved. Even that $10 donation to the PT Foundation or the PAC, which may not seem like much, is extremely appreciated. You are involved. Please consider "spreading this energy" to your peers, your fellow coworkers, your friends and associates who are PT's or PTA's. Get them to become members. Get the to help, even if it just to attend a district meeting. Get them involved.

Involved? More active? Yes. As it is in life, 90% of the work is, but cannot continue, to be done by 10% of the people. It shouldn't be this way. We are powerful when we work together. We need the troops; the masses standing up for what is right. Take a look around. Each one of us an enormous role to play in furthering the profession. My guess is that there are plenty of you who may have also said, "Ya, I'm doing something and I want to do more." More is anything that you know is truly a help, albeit small or maybe non-identifiable.

What then can you do to become even more involved? How about join a section of the APTA if you are not already a member. How about donating to the PAC if you have not. Contributing to the San Jose District web site would be an good way to get connected. Please take some time and consider being active by calling one of the committee chairs and volunteering to help

What about becoming active in the campaign of a local assembly or senate person? What a great way to let this individual know of your concern first hand. It can demonstrate to this legislator that you are a voice that wants to be heard. How about writing a letter on behalf of the Chapter to a designated assemblyperson or senator when requested?

Below is a list of the current senators and assembly representatives for the local area. Take a look. Maybe you've never heard of them. Maybe you don't like a particular stance on an issue that this person is taking. Make yourself heard. Be active. Get involved. Please try and increase that 10% figure that does all the work
